Microstructures help to alleviate suffering for lung disease patients
Millions of people in Germany suffer from chronic respiratory or lung disease. Inhalers help them to breathe more easily. In a unique atomizer, microstructures from Dortmund’s Boehringer Ingelheim microParts GmbH ensure that medicaments get to where they are really needed: in the lungs.
Conventional nebulizer technology often produces droplets which are too big, come too fast and therefore do not get past the larynx or vocal chords. The Respimat® Soft Inhaler from Boehringer Ingelheim produces the smallest particles suitable for the lungs at a slow speed. The core of the atomizer is a nozzle filter component with channel structures produced using microtechnology. These fine nozzles ensure that the active ingredients are broken down into micro-droplets which can be breathed in easily.
The Respimat® Soft Inhaler, which works without any propellant gas, has been on the European market since 2004. The licensing procedure for the US market has been started too. A new atomizer factory will double the manufacturing capacity for the soft inhaler in Dortmund from ten to twenty million.
