Biotechnology is one of the key industries of the future. Especially in Dortmund. Around 20 companies from the fields of biotechnology, medical technology and bio-IT have already set up here. They benefit from the ideal conditions and the interdisciplinary networks in Dortmund.

The proximity to numerous universities and renowned research centers such as the Max-Planck and Fraunhofer Institutes allows for research and development at the highest international levels.

The strong scientific background here goes hand in hand with the highly practical side. It has only taken a few years for a biotech cluster to grow in Dortmund which already enjoys a high standing in the worlds of business and science around the globe. Modern R&D institutions, up-and-coming technology companies and trendsetting cooperation projects are now typical features of this location. The City of Dortmund Economic Development Agency and the TechnologieZentrumDortmund (TZDO), one of the largest and most successful technology centers in Germany, have played a significant role in this development. One of the location’s strengths is the large number of interfaces between established future-oriented technologies. Among others, the largest micro/nanotechnology cluster in Europe has grown here, which also benefits the local biotech sector. Biotechnology today creates the requirements for the applications of state-of-the-art therapeutic methods of tomorrow.

The healthcare sector with its core of out-patient and in-patient care is thus an integral component of a value adding chain ranging from fundamental research to applications in hospitals and practices.
