Incline sensors stop car thieves

Incline sensors stop car thieves

Bad luck for car thieves who try to dismantle cars which are fitted with the incline sensors from MEAS Deutschland GmbH. If the car is raised, for example to remove the wheels, the sensor sets the alarm off. The Dortmund sensor manufacturer applies the spirit level principle to achieve this.

A chamber in the sensor is filled with conductive liquid. Electrodes along the inclination axis of the sensor generate an electronic stray field. If the car is tipped, the stray field changes in line with the level of the electrolyte and thus reveals the degree of the angle. The sensor then triggers an alarm when the degree of incline indicates wrongful use.

The sensor is so cheap to produce and yet so precise. For example it can determine whether it is a passing truck or vandals which are rocking the car. The reliability and low price have convinced many well-known car manufacturers to integrate this theft prevention sensor in their models.

The sensor is also being used more and more often as an electronic handbrake. It determines the angle of the parked car and the braking power needed to keep it where it is. This prolongs the brakes’ service life.
