Infrared-sensors localize people using heat radiation

Infrared-sensors localize people using heat radiation

Air conditioning systems which control airflow depending on people’s locations – presence detectors which open doors, switch on lights or register intruders – invisible security zones in museums – people counting systems…the IR Loc-technology from Ambiplex GmbH is so versatile and flexible – and in principle very simple: the company makes use of naturally emitted heat radiation to detect the people’s position and movements, discretely and reliably.

The system uses normal, cheap infrared sensors to detect persons inside buildings. The sensors also register the angle at which the heat source is being observed. Using a particular constellation of sensors and signal processing which the company developed themselves, the system can determine the location, direction of movement and intensity of the source of heat.

In this way the IR.Loc-Technology also pays attention, for example, to whether senior citizens living alone regularly open the fridge or go to the toilet – and whether they are lying in bed or next to it. This is because, in contrast to conventional movement sensors, infrared sensors also register resting people, who are reading, watching television or sleeping. In contrast to camera monitoring there is no focussed image so privacy is not compromised at all.

The versatility of infrared technology also convinced the members of the jury in the start2grow contest, which awarded the founders of the Ambiplex GmbH with the second prize in 2005.
