Intelligent assistance systems
Sensors in your wristwatch which monitor your pulse and blood pressure, the cooker which switches itself off or the “virtual tea party” are not just visions developed by technology nerds in the lab. Intelligent assistant systems which also enable senior citizens and the chronically ill to lead independent lives are widely accepted throughout the population. These technical helpers will soon be helping in many aspects of every day life not least because people in our society now live on their own longer,
Microsystem technology is indispensable for the development of intelligent assistance systems: controlled and networked using intelligent data processing, sensors and actuators regulate lighting, heating, atmospheric environment and water consumption. They protect us from fires, leaks and burglaries, monitor the health of the inhabitants and facilitate communication within the family and the neighborhood.
These are not only useful but also help to save costs: remote monitoring or telemonitoring of the chronically ill makes frequent visits by doctors superfluous and can save the health system in Germany billions of euros.
